Stuart Midgley elected chair of the WA branch Australian Institute of Physics.

Congratulations to our CIO, Dr Stuart Midgley, who was recently elected the Chair of the WA branch of the Australian Institute of Physics.

The Institute was formed in 1964 and is dedicated to promoting the role of physics in research, education, industry and the community.

Stuart is a passionate physicist who sees the profession as a creative field driven by the pursuit of a deep understanding of the fundamentals laws of nature. By pulling at the threads of the universe, physicists unravel amazing mysteries, developing new technologies and ideas along the way.

Indeed it was three physicists who in 1956, whilst researching semiconductors, discovered the transistor effect and steered the technology industry into what we know today!

As a member of the AIP and the National Committee for Physics Stuart is keen to promote a broader understanding of the role physics plays in industry and the career opportunities it presents. While academic pursuit is an obvious path for physicists, only about 5% of physicists follow this direction, with the vast majority moving into industry.

Physicists are highly regarded by companies that recognise their abilities for creative problem-solving. They are often the crazy scientist in the room, thinking outside the box and solving some of industry’s greatest challenges! Certainly Stuart fits that description – he was the driving force behind our patented DUG Cool immersion cooling system. And the only one in the organisation to offer to prove its safety by drinking the cooling fluid on camera!

Congratulations on your appointment Stuart. We hope the Institute is ready for you!
